Building Friends For Life: A Journey To Cuba

Thank you JCC 20s & 30s for helping me connect with so many interesting individuals with unique points of view. As we sat in a paradiso, toasting each other and having dinner where the Obamas ate, I was struck with a profound sense of purpose to help each individual present at that table— and the greater Cuban Jewish community— to live life to the fullest.
This trip provided me with a deeper context of Cuban life and breathtaking sunset views. As the 7-day trip progressed, participants dug deeper into what it means not only to be Cuban, but also a Cuban Jew.
Most Cuban Jews wish to have their children make Aliyah to Israel to encourage stronger observance of their Jewish faith and to provide them with a chance to experience life outside of Cuba. We met one such young adult named David. David was getting ready to participate in his second Maccabi games, representing Cuba in soccer. Over dinner, he explained how honored and humbled he is to visit Israel.
This trip helped me recognize that to make connections in adulthood requires substance and style. It’s seeing how both one’s actions and words sync. I recognize that I now have ten new people in my life that will be there for me. I was immensely touched when one trip participant was waiting for me to deplane in Miami, despite being literally the last person off the plane. She simply said, “buddies aren’t left behind.” I was so glad she was there so that I didn’t have to feel alone for one moment.
Thank you again to each person that our group interacted with throughout this truly magical journey to Cuba. Your kindness meant the world to me.
